Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to create a new VPS, or is this done in place?

It is done in place on your existing VPS. There is no migration and no need to place a separate order. The upgrade or downgrade option reconfigures the VPS you already have.

Will my IP address stay the same?

Yes. Your IPv4 and IPv6 addresses are preserved. Nothing about your network configuration changes.

Will my data, operating system, and installed services remain intact?

Yes. The change only adjusts the allocated resources (RAM, CPU, and disk). Your operating system, data, configuration, and installed services are not touched or reinstalled. As a general best practice, we still recommend taking a backup before any resource change.

Will there be any downtime?

There is no migration and no extended outage. The only interruption is a short reboot that you perform yourself. The new RAM, CPU, and disk allocation only take effect after the VPS is fully powered off and powered back on. Plan for a brief maintenance window equal to a normal reboot.

How do I bring the new resources online after I check out?

From your VPS control panel, perform a full power off followed by a power on. A reboot issued from inside the operating system is not enough because the resource change is applied at the hypervisor level when the VPS is started. Once it powers back on, the new resources are active.

My disk size went up, but the operating system still shows the old size. What do I do?

When you upgrade to a plan with more storage, the additional space is added to the virtual disk, but the partition and filesystem inside the VPS may still need to be extended before the OS can use it. This depends on your operating system and partition layout.

What will my final monthly price be?

The current price for each plan is shown on our website and is displayed again during the upgrade or downgrade flow. The total shown at checkout already includes any applicable recurring promotions, coupons, and account credit, so the final price you see before confirming is the price you pay.

Will I be charged right away, or is it covered by credit?

Because VPSs are pre-paid, any amount owed for an upgrade is prorated for the remainder of your current billing period and shown at checkout before you confirm. If you have account credit, you can apply it on the checkout page. From your next invoice onward, you are billed at the new plan's recurring price.

Can I downgrade as well, and is anything different?

No. Due to limitations of disks, we cannot safely allow self-service downgrades for VPSs because it can result in data loss or corruption. We suggest that you order the desired plan and move required data between the two VPSs.

How soon can I do this, and how long does it take?

You can upgrade at any time. The change is applied as soon as you complete checkout and power cycle the VPS, so it is effectively immediate aside from the reboot.

Do I have to go through support to upgrade?

No. The entire process is self-service from the billing portal. If you run into any issue during or after the change, open a ticket and we will assist.
